(8) 當that引導的賓語從句中的狀語(無論短語或從句) 位于that和從句之間時，that不能省略。例如：

I don’t get emotional here, because I think that in order to try to get the American government to move, you have to convince them that it’s in our interest, our interest in decency, that we end any relationship whatsoever, even indirect, with the Khmer Rouge. 

They realize that in order to clear the decks for the next historic advance, the working class must join with other antislavery forces.

They knew that where American money goes, there sooner or later goes American flesh and blood to “protect the investment.” 他們懂得，美國的金錢流到哪里，美國人早晚會到哪里去“保護他們的投資”。(ibid)

I was thinking that when we were back in the office with coffee he might think it was time to let me have a taste. 我在想，當我們端著咖啡回辦公室時，也許他會認為該讓我嘗一嘗了。

The idea struck me that if she discovered I knew or suspected her guilty, she would be playing off some of her malignant pranks on me. 我忽然想到，若是她發現我知道或懷疑她有罪的話，她會用跟我惡意開玩笑的辦法打擊我。

必須注意，不能把修飾賓語從句的狀語從句和where, when和 if等引導的賓語從句想混淆。試比較以下兩句：

I must tell you that if you use such methods you’ll never gain your ends. 我得告訴你，假如你用這種方法，你的目的是永遠不會達到的。(if引導的是條件狀語從句，其前的連詞that不可省略。)

I don’t know if you are gentlemen of fortune for the fun of thing, but I am not. 我不知道你們是不是為了好玩而當好漢，我可不是。(if引導的是賓語從句，if可用whether代替，其前不可加連詞that。)

(9) 當that引導的賓語從句的主語是非謂語動詞形式時，that不可省略。例如：

I didn’t know that taking a job under an alias is an offence against society. 我不知道化名找工作是違法的。// But if you think that to force the government’s hand is not an end in itself, but only a means to an end,… 可是如果你相信用暴力脅迫政府本身并不是目的，而是達到目的一種手段……

(10) 當that引導的賓語從句的主語或主語的定語this 或that時，that不可省略。例如：

I had to concede that that had become relevant. 我只好承認，那是恰當的。

You do not see that that letter was written on the 17th—the day after Miss Howard’s departure? 難道你不知道，那封信是在霍華德小姐離開后的那一天——17號寫的？

But to my surprise, he replied that this was as he had thought… 然而，使我感到吃驚的是，他回答說，這與他所想的是一回事。

The court held that this should not have happened if due care had been used and the doctrine was applied.

(11) 當that賓語從句的主語是同位成分時，that不可省略。例如：

I don’t wonder that you, the prostrate sons of labour, are incredulous of the existence of such a man. 我并不感到奇怪，你們這些逆來順受的靠勞動謀生的人，自然不會相信世上竟有這樣的人。

I knew that he the teacher would want to hear this. (BUY CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH)

5.3.3  that從句中的轉移否定

《新編英語語法》(第三版) p838認為：轉移否定 ( Transferred Negation) 指按語義本應出現于從句的否定詞not被轉移至主句的現象。例如：“我想今天不會下雨。”直譯是：I think (that) it’s not going to rain today.將否定詞not移至主句則是：I don’t think (that) it is going to rain today. 雖然not在從句中的否定意義較強，但不及轉移至主句中普遍。

轉移否定的動詞主要是以下表示看法(Opinion) 的動詞：anticipate, believe, calculate, fancy, expect, figure(AmE) , imagine, reckon(AmE) , suppose, think等。例如：

She doesn’t imagine we have finished the job yet. 她以為我們還沒有完成任務。

We don’t believe that he can do it. 我們相信他不會做此事。

I don’t suppose that he will be back until eight. 我猜想他不會在8點以前回來。

We are not anticipating that there will be much trouble.我們估計不會有多少麻煩。

I don’t expect Tom has eaten all the cake.我料想湯姆沒有吃完那個蛋糕。

但是，并非所有表示看法的動詞都適用于轉移否定結構。試比較：

I don’t assume that he came. 我不相信他來了。

I assume that he didn’t come. 我相信他沒有來。

She doesn’t fear that she may offend the boss. 她不怕得罪老板。

I fear Parliament won’t pass the bill. 我恐怕議會不會通過這項議案。

在上述兩組句子中，每組第一句和第二句意思是不同的，因而第一句并不是轉移否定，類似的動詞還有presume, surmise等。

另外，動詞wish后接that從句時不適用于否定轉移。例如：

I don’t wish that the problem will soon be settled. 我并不希望問題會很快解決。

這個句子在語義上并不等同于I wish that the problem won’t be settled soon. 我希望問題不會很快解決。

動詞hope也不適用于轉移否定。例如只可以說：

I hope it won’t snow.

I hope she doesn’t dislike the flowers.

不可以說：

*I don’t hope it won’t snow.

*I don’t hope she dislikes the flowers.

但可以說：

We cannot hope that Protestant and Catholic would begin peacefully to coexist once peace-keeping British soldiers had departed.

It’s hard to see people and not hope that they’re as inspired and as excited about the Army as I am.
