2. 表示具體意義的造成危險的原因或人(物)等，或指威脅、危害等。是可數名詞。如：

He is a danger to society. 他對社會是個危險人物。

Do you know the dangers of smoking? 你知道吸煙的危害嗎?

◆dangerous adj.

1. 表示“危險的”，指本身對他人或他物有危險。如：

The dog looks dangerous. 這狗看來有(咬人的)危險。

It’s a dangerous bridge. 那是座危險的橋。

比較：

The man is dangerous. 這人很危險。(即對他人造成危險)

The man is in danger. 這人有危險。(即自己處于危險中)

2. 可用于 It’s dangerous for sb to do sth, 但不用于 Sb is dangerous to do sth 或后接 that 從句。如：

人們在這條河里游泳很危險。

誤：It’s dangerous that people swim in the river.

誤：People are dangerous to swim in the river.

正：It’s dangerous for people to swim in the river.

比較：The river is dangerous to swim in. (正)

The river is dangerous for swimmers. (正)

◆dare v.

1. 用作情態動詞，主要用于否定句、疑問句或條件從句中。如：

Dare you ask him? 你敢問他嗎?

They dared not come. 他們不敢來了。

If you dare speak to me like that again, you will be sorry. 你敢再這樣對我說，你會后悔的。

注：I dare say 是習慣說法，并不一定要譯為“我敢說”。它所表示的是一種不肯定的語氣，常譯為“很可能”、“大概”、“我想”等。有時用作反語。如：

　I dare say (that) you are right. 我想你是對的。

Oh, you mean to win? I dare say you will. 啊，你想打贏?

我且看你贏吧。

作為情態動詞，dare 沒有單數第三人稱形式，但有過去式。如： No one dared speak of it. 沒有人敢談及此事。

但是盡管有過去式，人們還是常用現在式表示過去或后接完成式動詞。如：

Mother dare(d) not tell father she’d given away his old jacket. 母親不敢告訴父親她把他的舊上衣送人了。

I didn’t like their new house though I daren’t have saidso. 我不喜歡他們的新房子，雖然我沒敢這樣說過。

2. 用作實義動詞，意為“敢于”，可以有各種詞形變化，其后多接帶 to 的不定式(有時 to 也可省去)，可用于肯定句、否定句、疑問句以及各種從句。如：

He didn’t dare (to) go. 他不敢去。

We must dare to think, speak and act. 我們必須敢想，敢說，敢做。

I wonder how he dares (to) say such things. 我納悶他怎么竟敢說出這樣的話來。

The boy stood before the teacher, not daring to look up. 這個小男孩站在老師面前不敢抬頭。

◆dawn n.

1. 用作名詞，表示“黎明”或“拂曉”，通常是不可數名詞，其前通常不用冠詞。如：

It’s almost dawn. 天快亮了。

We started at (before) dawn. 我們天亮時(前)出發。

When dawn broke we had already got there. 天亮時我們已到達那兒了。

2. 短語 from dawn till dark [dusk]，意為“從早到晚”，屬書面用語，在口語或非正式文體中通常用 from morning to night。如：

They worked from dawn to dark. 他們起早摸黑地工作。

◆deal n. & v.

1. 用作名詞，注意兩條短語：

(1) a great [good] deal of 意為“許多”，其后通常接不可數名詞(包括動名詞)。如：

He spent a great deal of money on it. 他為此花了很多錢。

He’s done a great deal of travelling. 他旅游了很多地方。

(2) a great [good] deal, 可用作主語、賓語、狀語(修飾動詞分詞或比較級等)。如：

He smokes a great deal. 他經常見面。

He was a good deal surprised. 他非常吃驚。

I’ve heard a great deal about it. 對此事我聽說了不少。

He knew a great deal more than I did. 他懂的比我比得多。

At the end of the year there was a great deal to do. 年底有很多事要做。
