說明：許多同學在寫作時，由于對句子結構沒有弄清楚，很容易漏掉英語句子末尾的介詞。對于上面一句而言，由于 that we’re talking to 是修飾 people 的定語從句，關系代詞在定語從句中用作介詞 to 的賓語，其中的介詞 to 不可省略。又如以下各句末尾的介詞也不可省略：The idea that everyone should be required to vote by law is something I don’t agree with. 主張由法律規(guī)定每個人都要投票的意見是我所不能贊同的。The fridge isn’t working properly. I’m having it looked at. 電冰箱出了毛病，我在請人看呢。Her uncle and mother came two days ago, and she is being well taken care of. 她的舅父和母親前兩天來過，因此現(xiàn)在有人很好地照看著她。He is the man whose house the pictures were stolen from. 他就是那個家里藏畫被盜的人。

句意：我們對我們正與之交談的那些人的經(jīng)歷很感興趣。

誤用：He called at all the housewives in the area and asked them to sign the petition.

正確：He called on all the housewives in the area and asked them to sign the petition.

說明：call at 通常后接地方，而call on 后面則通常接某人。如：She called at his office yesterday. 她昨天去了他辦公室拜訪。

句意：他走訪了這一地區(qū)的所有主婦，要求他們在請愿書上簽名。

誤用：Joy is engaged to a daring, very attractive young Air Force pilot.

改正：Joy is engaged with a daring, very attractive young Air Force pilot.

說明：表示“同某人訂婚”，英語習慣上用 be engaged to sb，而不說 be engaged with sb。又如：He is engaged to a nurse. 他與一位護士訂了婚。

句意：喬伊與一位勇敢的，富有吸引力的年輕空軍飛行員訂了婚。

誤用：The sun rises from the east and sets in the west.

改正：The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

說明：漢語說“太陽從東方升起”，但英語習慣上說 rise in the east。

句意：太陽從東方升起，至西方落下。

誤用：Along with the introduction of advanced management techniques and under the help of Mr. Freeker, the hotel is steadily becoming one of the world’s first-class hotels.

改正：Along with the introduction of advanced management techniques and with the help of Mr. Freeker, the hotel is steadily becoming one of the world’s first-class hotels.

說明：漢語說“在……的幫助下”，英語要說 with the help of sb。又如：With his help, I finished it in time. 在他的幫助下，我及時做完了。

句意：靠引進先進的管理技術和弗里克先生的幫助，這家飯店正穩(wěn)步成為世界一流飯店。
