◆storey n.

1. 表示房子的“層”，在美國英語中被拼為 story (注意兩者詞尾的不同變化)。如：

The building has ten storeys [stories]. 這建筑物有十層。

She lives in a five-storied [five-storeyed] building. 她住在一幢五層的樓房里。

2. 表示“在第幾層或第幾樓”，可用介詞 in(側重空間)或 on(側重層面)。如：

He’s living in the second storey. 他住在二樓。

My room is on the second story. 我的房間在二樓。

3. “一座六層的房子”，以下說法均可：

正：a six-story house /a six-storey house

正：a six-storied house /a six-storeyed house

正：a house of six stories /a house of six storeys

正：a house six stories high /a house six stroeys high

◆straight

用于本義，表示“直”、“垂直”、“筆直”等；用于引申義，表示“直截了當”、“直接”、“直率”等，可用作形容詞也可用作副詞。如：

The streets were straight and narrow. 街道既直又窄。

Go straight on for two miles. 徑直往前走2英里。

He went straight home after school. 放學后他直接回了家。

I want a straight answer to my question. 我要求對我的問題作出直截了當的回答。

The smoke rose straight up because there was no wind. 因為沒有風，所以煙筆直上升。

I told him straight that I didn’t like him. 我坦率地告訴他我不喜歡他。

注：straight既可用作形容詞，也可用作副詞，注意不要想當然地用 straightly作其副詞形式，后者在現代英語中已被廢棄(一般詞典已不收錄此詞)。

◆street n.

1. 表示“在街道上”，可用介詞 in(英)或 on(美)。如：

He lives in [on] our street. 我住在我們那條街。

Don’t play in [on] the street. 不要在街上玩。

2. 在由 street 構成的專有名詞前一般不用冠詞。如：

She lives in Oxford Street. 她住在牛津街。

He lives on Baker Street. 他住在貝克街。

注：英國英語中的 the High Street(大街，正街)通常有定冠詞，但與之同義的美國英語用詞 Main Street 卻通常不用冠詞。

◆strict adj.

用作形容詞，表示“嚴格的”、“嚴厲的”等，其后通常接介詞with(對人)或 in(對事)。如：

He’s very strict with his children. 他對他的孩子很嚴格。

He is strict with himself in his work. 他在工作上對自己要求很嚴。

用于事物，有時也接介詞 on 或 about。如：

He’s not very strict about it. 他對這件事不很嚴肅。

She was very strict on [in] the observance of the rules. 她嚴格遵守規則。
