用作名詞，表示“眼淚”，其實是指“一滴眼淚”，所以是可數(shù)名詞，不要認為“淚水”是“水”，不可數(shù)。如：

一滴眼淚沿著他的面頰流了下來。

正：A tear rolled down his cheek.

誤：A drop of tear rolled down his cheek.

淚水模糊了她的眼睛。

正：Her eyes were dimmed with tears.

誤：Her eyes were dimmed with tear.

◆technology

1. 表示“技術(shù)”，通常是不可數(shù)名詞。如：

Modern life depends on good technology. 現(xiàn)代生活依賴優(yōu)良的技術(shù)。

Computer technology is changing the world. 電腦技術(shù)正在改變世界。

2. 漢語說“科學技術(shù)”或“科技”，指的通常是“科學和技術(shù)”(science and technology)，而不是“科學的技術(shù)” ( scientific technology)。

3. 比較 technology 與 technique：后者指“技巧”、“技能”等。如：

Technique must be gained by practice. 技巧須通過實踐獲得。

You should improve your writing technique. 你應(yīng)該要改進你的寫作技巧。

◆telephone n. & v.

1. 用作名詞，表示“電話”，在口語中可縮略為 phone。比較：

我通過電話告訴了他這個消息。

正：He told me the news by (tele)phone.

正：He told me the news on the (tele)phone.

正：He told me the news over the (tele)phone.

注：漢語說“接電話”，英語通常用動詞 answer, 而不能按漢語意思用動詞 receive。如：

If the (tele)phone rings, can you answer it? 如果有人來電話的話，請接一下好嗎?

telephone 用作動詞時的情形也一樣。如：

I (tele)phoned in the afternoon but nobody answered. 我下午打了電話，但沒有人接。

2. 用作動詞，表示“打電話”，可用作及物動詞或不及動詞；若表示給某人打電話，可直接跟某人作賓語，也可以先接介詞 to, 再跟賓語。如：

I’ll telephone (to) him. 我將給他打電話。

注：可接雙賓語，表示打電話把某事告訴某人，若雙賓語易位，用介詞 to。如：

用作名詞，表示“電視機”(＝television set)，是可數(shù)名詞；若指“電視節(jié)日”，則是不可數(shù)名詞，且一般不用冠詞。如：

We bought our first television in 1978. 我們的第一部電視機是1978年買的。

The children watch far too much television. 孩子們看電視看得太多了。

I watched the game on television. 我在電視上看了比賽。

注：television 在口語中常可略作 TV 或 telly。

◆temperature n.

1. 漢語說“量體溫”，英語習慣上用動詞 take。如：

The nurse has just taken my temperature. 護士剛給我量過體溫。

2. 有時可表示“發(fā)燒”(可數(shù))。如：

He has [is running] a (high) temperature and has gone to bed. 他發(fā)高燒，已上床睡覺了。
