weekday 指“周日”，weekend 指“周末”。如：

The library is open on weekdays only. 圖書館只在周日開放(即在周末不開放)。

This office is closed on [at] the weekend. 這個(gè)辦公室周末(即星期六和星期日)不辦公。

注：表示“在周末”，可用介詞 at(英)或 on(美)。如：

She doesn’t work at [on] weekends. / She doesn’t work at[on] the weekend. 他周末不工作。

在美國英語中，有時(shí)可將 weekends 用作副詞(即其前的介詞 on可以省略)。

比較以下兩句所用介詞：

He has gone away for the weekend. 他度周末去了。

What did you do over the weekend? 整個(gè)周末你在干什么?

◆weigh v.

1. 表示“稱……的重量”，是及物動(dòng)詞；表示“重(多少)”，是不及物動(dòng)詞。如：

He weighed the fish. 他稱了這條魚。

Do you often weigh yourself? 你經(jīng)常稱體重嗎?

He weighs 60 kilos. 他體重60公斤。

The meat weighs five pounds. 這肉重五磅。

2. 比較 by weight & in weight：前者表示“按重量”，后者表示“重量上”。如：

Do they charge carriage by weight? 他們是按重量收取運(yùn)費(fèi)嗎?

It’s smaller in size but greater in weight. 它體積比較小，但分量比較重。

◆welcome adj.，n. & v.

1. 用作形容詞，基本義為“受歡迎的”。如：

It’s a welcome suggestion. 那是一條受歡迎的建議。

You’re always welcome at [in] my house. 任何時(shí)候都?xì)g迎你來我家。

注：用于 be welcome to (do) sth, 其中 welcome 的不是表示“受歡迎的”而是指“被允許的”。如：

你隨時(shí)可以用我的車。

正：You are welcome to my car any time.

正：You are welcome to use my car any time.

正：You are welcome to the use of my car any time.

用于習(xí)語 You are welcome! 意為“不用謝”。如：

A：Thank you for your help. 謝謝你的幫助。

B：You’re welcome. 不用謝。

2. 用作動(dòng)詞，表示“歡迎”，是規(guī)則動(dòng)詞，其過去式和過去分詞均為 welcomed, 注意不要模仿 come→came→come 的變化形式。如：

He was welcomed by the students. 他受到同學(xué)們的歡迎。

She welcomed the guests warmly. 他熱情歡迎客人。

注：不要根據(jù)漢語習(xí)慣直譯“歡迎某人做某事”。如：

我們歡迎史密斯先生講話。

正：Let’s welcome Mr Smith and ask him to speak.

誤：Let’s welcome Mr Smith to speak.

歡迎你們到我們學(xué)校來。

正：Welcome to our school.

誤：Welcome you to come to our school.

3. 用作名詞，表示“歡迎”，通常是可數(shù)名詞。如：

She received a warm welcome. 她受到熱烈歡迎。

He had rather a cold welcome. 他受到相當(dāng)冷淡的接待。

　4. 用作感嘆詞，其后常接副詞或介詞短語(一般是介詞to)。如：

Welcome home (back)! 歡迎歸來!

Welcome to our factory (London). 歡迎來我們工廠(來倫敦)!
