（三）動名詞作表語和進行時態的區別

“動名詞作表語”和“進行時態”形似而神異。請看這兩個句子：She is looking after the children.和Her job is looking after the children. 它們太相似了，只是主語不同，其他成分完全一樣，意思卻大相徑庭，這是為什么？

這確實是一個很有意思的問題。Her job is looking after the children. 意為 “她的工作是照料孩子的。” 本句中，is 是系動詞，looking after the children是動名詞作表語。因為is是系動詞，主語和表語是平等的并列關系，所以，主語和表語可以互換而意思保持不變：Looking after the children is her job. 照料孩子是她的工作。

She is looking after the children. 意為“她正在照料孩子。”本句中，is是助動詞，跟動詞look的現在分詞構成進行時態，所以is前后兩部分不能互換。不可說：*Looking after the children is she. 又如：

His hobby is collecting stamps. 他的業余愛好是集郵。

→Collecting stamps is his hobby.

He is collecting stamps. 他正在集郵。

不可說：* Collecting stamps is he.

His ambition is working as a lawyer. 他的抱負是當律師。

→Working as a lawyer is his ambition.

He is working as a lawyer. 他正在以律師的身份工作著。

不可說：*Working as a lawyer is he.

【規律】A代表“主語”，B代表“動詞-ing形式”：

“主系表結構”：A is B. 可以說：B is A. （is意為“是”）

“進行時態”：A is B. 不可以說：B is A. （is doing意為“正在做”）

His hobby is collecting stamps. 他的業余愛好是集郵。

His ambition is working as a lawyer. 他的抱負是當律師。
