◆plenty of

1. 意為“許多”、“充分”，其后可接可數名詞或不可數名詞；用作主語，謂語與其后名詞的數保持一致。比較：

There is plenty of money. 有足夠的錢。

There are plenty of books. 有足夠的書。

2. 通常用于肯定句中，在否定句或疑問句中常用 enough, much, many 等代之:

There is plenty of time. 時間還很多。

There isn’t much time. 時間不多了。

Is there enough time? 時間還夠嗎?

3. 若省略其后的名詞，則通常要省略其中的介詞(of)。如：

A：Have we got enough plates? 咱們的盤子夠用嗎?

B：Yes, there’re plenty (of them). 是的，有很多。

◆police n.

1. 表示“警察”，通常表總稱，其前通常用定冠詞，形式上是單數，但含義上為復數；用作主語時，謂語用復數。如：

The police are looking for him. 警方正在找他。

The police checked all the cars entering the city. 警察檢察了所有進城的汽車。

注：在現代英語中有時也可不用冠詞。如：

Police had to break up the crowd. 警察不得不驅散人群。

Police warned drivers that the roads were icy. 警方提醒司機路面已結了冰。

2. 有時也可表示個體意義的“警察”(=policeman)，其復數仍不能加詞尾-s。如：

More police are needed here. 這里還需要更多的警察。

Several hundred police were sent there to keep order. 有幾百名警察被派去維持秩序。

注：與數詞連用表示“若干名警察”時，用 police 和 police-man 均可，所以上面兩例中的 police 也可換成 policemen, 但是與較小數字連用時，似乎用 policeman 更常見，如 two policemen 就比 two police 常見。表示“一個警察”時，通常只說 a policeman而不說 a police。

◆polite adj.

1. 表示“有禮貌的”，要表示對某人有禮貌，后接介詞to。如：

Be more polite to ladies. 對女士要更有禮貌。

2. 比較以下兩句:

他那樣做很有禮貌。

正：It’s polite of him to do so.

正：He is polite to do so.

正：He is polite enough to do so.

◆politics n.

1. 表示抽象意義的政治或政治學，是不可數名詞，且表示單數意義。如：

Politics is an important subject. 政治是一門重要學科。

He is studying politics at university. 他在大學學政治。

2. 表示政治活動之類的比較具體的意義，可以表示單數意義，也可以表示復數意義。如：

Politics has [have] never interested me. 我對政治從來就不感興趣。

3. 表示政治觀點或政見之類的意義，通常表示復數意義。如：

What are your politics? 你的政見如何?
