◆devote v.

表示“把……獻給(用在)……”，通常只用作及物動詞。表示把時間、金錢、精力、勞力、生命等奉獻于……，或專心于或致力于……。常與介詞 to 連用(注意不要將此介詞誤認為是不定式符號)。主要用于以下結構：

1. devote oneself to……

She devoted herself to tennis in her teens. 她少女時代熱愛網球。

The man devoted himself to helping the poor. 這個人致力于幫助窮人。

2. devote sth to……

Please devote more time to your work. 請在工作上多花點時間。

Mary devoted her life to caring for the sick. 瑪麗獻身于為病人服務。

3. be devoted to……

He is devoted to himself alone. 他只顧自己。

She is devoted to her children. 她深愛她的孩子。

This dictionary is devoted to explaining word usage. 這本詞典是解釋詞的用法的。

◆diary n.

表示“寫日記”，英語通常用動詞 keep, 但有時也用 write。用不同動詞含義稍有差別：keep a diary 側重指記日記的習慣(write things in a diary regularly)，而 write a diary則側重指“寫”這一動作，因此要表示往日記里寫什么東西時，要用 write。如：

Did you keep a diary while you were traveling in Europe?你在歐洲旅行時記日記嗎?

He took out his diary and began to write. 他拿出日記本就寫了起來。

He wrote everything he saw in his diary. 他把所看到的情況都寫進日記里。

有時兩者都可用。如：(www.hz123456.com)

I keep [write] a diary in English. 我用英語寫日記。

A diarist is a person who keeps [writes] a diary. 日記作 者即指寫日記的人。

◆dictation n.

1. 表示“聽寫”這一行為或過程，是不可數名詞。如：

We have dictation today. 今天我們要聽寫了。

Dictation makes my throat sore. 聽寫把我的嗓子讀痛了。

2. 表示“聽寫”的內容或材料，是可數名詞。如：

Please hand in your dictations. 請把你們的聽寫(材料)交上來。

The teacher gave us two dictations today. 老師要我們聽寫了兩次(或兩份材料)。

◆dictionary n.

漢語中的“查字典”，通常的表達是：

a. look up sth in a (the) dictionary

b. consult a [the] dictionary

Look up these words in the dictionary. 在字典查查這些詞。

If you want to know how a word is used, look it up in the

dictionary. 你要想知道一個詞的用法，就去查字典。

He often consulted a dictionary when he read the book. 他讀這本書時經常查字典。

注：不少人認為不能直接說 look up the dictionary, 其實這種表達在現代英語中也可以用，請看以下摘自權威詞書的實例：

I spend more time looking up the dictionary than reading

the book. 我讀這本書時查字典的時間還多些。

Look up the dictionary and explain the meaning of theitalicized words. 查字典然后解釋斜體詞的意思。
