◆plenty of

1. 意為“許多”、“充分”，其后可接可數(shù)名詞或不可數(shù)名詞；用作主語，謂語與其后名詞的數(shù)保持一致。比較：

There is plenty of money. 有足夠的錢。

There are plenty of books. 有足夠的書。

2. 通常用于肯定句中，在否定句或疑問句中常用 enough, much, many 等代之:

There is plenty of time. 時(shí)間還很多。

There isn’t much time. 時(shí)間不多了。

Is there enough time? 時(shí)間還夠嗎?

3. 若省略其后的名詞，則通常要省略其中的介詞(of)。如：

A：Have we got enough plates? 咱們的盤子夠用嗎?

B：Yes, there’re plenty (of them). 是的，有很多。

◆police n.

1. 表示“警察”，通常表總稱，其前通常用定冠詞，形式上是單數(shù)，但含義上為復(fù)數(shù)；用作主語時(shí)，謂語用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

The police are looking for him. 警方正在找他。

The police checked all the cars entering the city. 警察檢察了所有進(jìn)城的汽車。

注：在現(xiàn)代英語中有時(shí)也可不用冠詞。如：

Police had to break up the crowd. 警察不得不驅(qū)散人群。

Police warned drivers that the roads were icy. 警方提醒司機(jī)路面已結(jié)了冰。

2. 有時(shí)也可表示個(gè)體意義的“警察”(=policeman)，其復(fù)數(shù)仍不能加詞尾-s。如：

More police are needed here. 這里還需要更多的警察。

Several hundred police were sent there to keep order. 有幾百名警察被派去維持秩序。

注：與數(shù)詞連用表示“若干名警察”時(shí)，用 police 和 police-man 均可，所以上面兩例中的 police 也可換成 policemen, 但是與較小數(shù)字連用時(shí)，似乎用 policeman 更常見，如 two policemen 就比 two police 常見。表示“一個(gè)警察”時(shí)，通常只說 a policeman而不說 a police。

◆polite adj.

1. 表示“有禮貌的”，要表示對(duì)某人有禮貌，后接介詞to。如：

Be more polite to ladies. 對(duì)女士要更有禮貌。

2. 比較以下兩句:

他那樣做很有禮貌。

正：It’s polite of him to do so.

正：He is polite to do so.

正：He is polite enough to do so.

◆politics n.

1. 表示抽象意義的政治或政治學(xué)，是不可數(shù)名詞，且表示單數(shù)意義。如：

Politics is an important subject. 政治是一門重要學(xué)科。

He is studying politics at university. 他在大學(xué)學(xué)政治。

2. 表示政治活動(dòng)之類的比較具體的意義，可以表示單數(shù)意義，也可以表示復(fù)數(shù)意義。如：

Politics has [have] never interested me. 我對(duì)政治從來就不感興趣。

3. 表示政治觀點(diǎn)或政見之類的意義，通常表示復(fù)數(shù)意義。如：

What are your politics? 你的政見如何?
