◆poor adj.

1. 用于 the poor, 相當于名詞，表示“窮人”，具有復數意義。如：

The poor were looked down upon in the old days. 在舊社會窮人受人瞧不起。

2. 比較 be poor in 與 be poor at ：前者表示在某方面貧乏；后者表示做某事很差勁或不行。如：

He was poor in money but rich in knowledge. 他金錢貧乏，但知識豐富。

The man is poor at swimming. /The man is a poor swimmer. 這個人不善于游泳。

◆popular adj.

1. 表示“受歡迎的”、“討人喜歡的”，若表示受某人歡迎或討某人喜歡，其后通常接 with(有時也接 among)。如：

The singer is very popular with [among] young people. 這位歌手很受年輕人的歡迎。

He is popular among men, though not, perhaps, with ladies. 他很受男士們的歡迎，雖然也許不一定討女士們的喜歡。

2. 表示“大眾化的”、“民眾的”、“流行的”等義，通常只用作定語，一般不用作表語。如：

popular science 大眾科學popular music 流行音樂

popular newspaper 大眾報紙 popular opinion 民意

◆population n.

1. 表示“人口”，是集合名詞，通常用單數形式。用作主語時，其謂語動詞通常用單數。如：

The population of the country is only ten million. 這個國家的人口僅有一千萬。

Half the world’s population doesn’t get enough to eat. 世界有一半人口沒有足夠的食物吃。

注：有時謂語用單數(側重整體)或復數(側重個體)均可，尤其是其前有幾分之幾或百分之幾十之類的修飾語時。如：

What per cent of the population read [reads] books? 識字的人占人口的百分之幾?

2. 其前不能用數詞修飾，也不能與 many, few 之類的詞連用，但在說明數量多少時可用 large, small 等修飾。若表示“某地擁有多少人口”，一般用“have a population of＋基數詞”這樣的結構。如：

這個城市人口很多。

誤：The population of this city is very many.

正：The population of this city is very large.

中國有12億多人口。

誤：China has more than twelve hundred million popula- tion.

正：China has a population of more than twelve hundred million.

3. 若要打聽某地的人口數，一般用類似下面這樣的句型：

How large [What] is the population of China? 中國有多少人口?

◆possession n.

1. 表示“擁有”、“占有”等，是不可數名詞。比較以下各組句子有無修飾語(定冠詞或物主代詞等)所導致的含義上的區別 (主動或被動)：

這房子是李先生的。

正：Mr Li was in possession of the house.

正：The house was in the possession of Mr Li.

他得了一大筆財產。

正：He came into possession of a large fortune.

正：A large fortune came into his possession.

注：take possession of 和 have possession of 這兩個結構中通常不用冠詞。如：

He has had possession of the house for ten years. 他擁有這房子已有十年了。

The policeman took possession of the thief’s bag. 警察拿下了那個小偷的包。

2. 表示“財產”、“所有物”等，是可數名詞，但通常要用復數形式。如：

He has few possessions. 他的財產很少。

He is a man of great possessions. 他是個大財主。

He lost all his possessions in the fire. 他在火災中失去了他所有的財產。
