5. 比較 the same……as & the same……that：一般說來，用 as 表示同類物，用 that 表示同一物。如：

This is the same watch as I lost yesterday. 這塊表與我昨天丟失的一模一樣。

This is the same watch that I lost yesterday. 這正是我昨天丟失的那塊表。

以上區別只是原則性的，在實際運用中，有時可混用。

◆sand n.

1. 表示“沙(子)”，是物質名詞(不可數)。如：

The sand on the beach was white and clean. 海濱的沙又白又干凈。

注：表示“一粒沙”，用 a grain of sand。

2. 表示“沙灘”、“沙漠”等，通常用復數形式。如：

Children like to play on the sand(s). 小孩子喜歡在沙灘上玩。

They walked on the burning sands of the desert. 他們走在沙漠滾燙的沙子上。

比較：play in the sand 與 play on the sand：前者表示在一堆沙子上玩或玩沙子(＝play in a pile of sand)；后者表示在沙灘上玩(＝play by the seashore)，其實后者也可用(而且通常用)復數形式 play on the sands。

◆satisfaction n.

1. 表示一般意義的“滿意”，是不可數名詞；表示具體意義的“令人滿意的事或東西”等，是可數名詞。如：

I heard the news with much satisfaction. 我聽到這個消息非常滿意。

His satisfaction at [with] this result is obvious. 他對結果感到滿意是顯然易見的。

Living here is one of the greatest satisfactions of her life. 住在這兒是她生命中的一大快事。

It is a satisfaction (to me) to know (that) he is well again. 得知他已痊愈，(我)深感欣慰。

2. 用于 have [get] the satisfaction of doing sth, 意為“對……感到滿意”。如：

I have the satisfaction of knowing that I have done my best. 我知道自己已盡力了，所以也就心滿意足了。

3. 用于to one’s satisfaction, 意為“使某人感到滿意”。如：

The war came to an end, to the satisfaction of everybody. 戰爭結束，人人均感滿意。

◆satisfy v.

1. 用作動詞，表示“使滿意(滿足)”，是及物動詞。比較：

The answer didn’t satisfy them. 這個答案沒使他們滿意。

They weren’t satisfied with the answer. 他們對這個回答并不滿意。(注意用介詞 with)

2. 比較 satisfying 與 satisfied：兩者都可用作形容詞，前者意為“令人滿意的”，后者意為“(人)感到滿意的”。比較：

The story had a satisfying ending. 故事結局令人滿意。

Everyone was satisfied with it. 大家對此都很滿意。

注：與 satisfying 同義的另一個表示“令人滿意的”的形容詞是 satisfactory。如：

Your work is satisfactory. 你的工作干得不錯。

另外，satisfied 有時可修飾 air, smile, expression 等，用以說明其相應的邏輯主語“感到滿意”。如：

The woman left with a satisfied smile. 這個女人帶著滿意的笑容離開了。
