appreciate & enjoy

兩者均可表示“欣賞”，區別如下：

1. appreciate 指對事物有深入的理解力或較高的修養，并能鑒賞、品評等，相當于 understand or enjoy fully。如：

Not many of us can appreciate Beijing opera. 我們中間沒有幾個人能真正欣賞京劇。

You will appreciate his novels if you read his autobiography. 如果你讀了他的自傳，你就更能欣賞他的小說了。

2. enjoy 表示“欣賞”，屬一般用語，不像 appreciate 那樣具有較高的修養，也無需“鑒賞”，只是得到感官或精神上的樂趣或滿足，側重享受，相當于 get pleasure from 的意思。如：

I enjoyed the play very much. 我很欣賞這出戲。

We didn’t enjoy his lecture. 他的講課，我們并不欣賞。

appreciate & thank

兩者均可表示“感激”，但有區別：即 appreciate 的賓語是事或事物，而 thank 的賓語必須是人。如：

我們對他道謝后就離開了。

誤：We appreciated him and left.

正：We thanked him and left.

我們感謝你的好意。

誤：We thank your kindness.

正：We appreciate your kindness. (比較：Thank you for your kindness.)

area, region & district

三者均可表示“地區”，區別如下：

1. area 是這組詞中用得最廣的，表示的“地區”可大可小，但通常不指行政分區。如：

I find the people in this area very friendly. 我發現這個 地方的人很友好。

2. region 通常指較大的地區，它既可以表示一個國家的行政分區，也可以指非行政分區。如：

The southeast is the richest of England. 英國的東南部是最富有的。

Italy is divided into 20 regions. 意大利被分為20個行政區。

其他用例：

the Arctic region 北極地區   an oil region 石油產區

in country regions 在農村地區  a forest region 林區

3. district 指相對于 region 稍小的地區，通常指一個國家或城市的行政分區，有時也指非行政分區。如：

The letters SW1 stand for a postal district of London. SW1 這幾個字母代表倫敦的郵政分區。

The busiest shopping district in Beijing is around Wangfujing Street. 北京最熱鬧的商業區是王府井大街一帶。

army & troop

1. 兩者都可表示“軍隊”、“部隊”，但 army 著重指軍隊的整體，而 troop(通常用復數形式 troops)則著重指構成軍隊的士兵成員。如：

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army was founded on August 1927. 中國人民解放軍建立于 1927 年 8 月 1 日。

The troops forced an entrance into the town. 部隊強行進入這市鎮。

由于 army 側重指軍隊的整體，所以漢語中的“參軍”等在英語中應用 army。如：

join [go into] the army 參軍   leave the army 退伍

2. army 在與 navy(海軍)，air force(空軍) 并列時，特指“陸軍”。如：

We must build up a modern army，navy and air force. 我們必須建設一支現代化的陸、海、空軍。

注：army 還可指軍隊建制里“師”以上的“軍”。比較：

battalion 營  company 連  platoon 排  squad 班
