◆joke n. & v.

1. 用作名詞，注意以下與動詞的常見搭配:

He told [made] some very funny jokes. 他講了一些很滑稽的笑話。

Let’s play a joke on the teacher and lock the doorso that he can’t get in. 我們來給老師開個玩笑，把門鎖起來，讓他進不去。

注：以下各句所用動詞不同，介詞也不同:

不要跟老人開玩笑。

正：Don’t make a joke about an old man.

正：Don’t play a joke on an old man.

正：Don’t have a joke with an old man.

2. 用作動詞，是不及物動詞。若表示跟某人開玩笑或拿某事開玩笑，分別用介詞 with(＋sb)或 about(＋sth)。如：

He must be joking. 他一定在開玩笑。

They joked with me about what I said. 他們拿我說的話給我開玩笑。

◆joy n.

1. 表示抽象意義的“歡樂”或“高興”等，是不可數名詞; 表示具體意義的“使人高興的人或事”，是可數名詞。比較：

它令我非常高興。

正：It is a great joy to me.

正：It gives me great joy.

注：to one’s joy, 意為“使某人高興的是”。如：

To our joy, we succeeded at last. 使我們高興的是我們最后成功了。

2. 下例中用介詞 for 或 with 大致同義：

He jumped for [with] joy. 他高興得跳了起來。

She sang and danced for [with] joy. 她高興得載歌載舞。

◆judge v.

1. 表示評價或判斷的依據，通常連接介詞 from 或 by。如：

Don’t judge by [from] appearances. 不要從外表下判斷。

2. 用于 judging from [by]，意為“根據……來看”，在句中用作插入語，此時該短語無需與句子主語保持一致。如：

Judging from what you say, he ought to succeed. 根據你所說的，他應該會成功。

Judging from [by] his accent, he may be from the south.聽他的口音，他可能是南方人。

注：以上結構有時也用 judge的過去分詞或不定式形式，但不如以上用現在分詞的情形常見。如：

To judge from the evidence of the experts, the man wasstill alive at three o’clok. 從專家們提供的證據來判斷，這個人3點鐘還活著。

Judged by the ordinary standards, he was reliable. 用一般的標準來衡量，他是可信賴的。

◆just adv.

注意以下各用法所經常連用的時態和句型：

1. 表示“剛剛”、“剛才”，在英國英語中通常與現在完成時連用，而在美國英語中通常與一般過去時連用。一般要放在動詞之前，不能放在句末。如：

He (has) just arrived in Japan. 他剛到日本。

He (has) just finished his work. 他剛剛做完工作。

2. 用于請求對方注意或理解等，尤其用于祈使句，意為“請”、“且請”、“……看”。如：

Just listen to him! 聽他說說看! 

Just a moment, please. 請稍等片刻。

3. 表示“正好”、“恰好”(=exactly)，后面通常接名詞、名詞詞組或句子。如：

It’s just my size. 那正是我的尺碼。

This is just what I wanted. 這正是我所要的。
